Its unique bloom consists of a green and reddish brown, hooded stalk called a spathe that encloses a spadixa small, upright spikeof microscopic green to purple florets. The overall effect is that of a preacher sermonizing from a pulpit! In fall, the spathe falls away to reveal a tight cluster of bright red berries that birds feed on.
